Carolyn’s Home: What We Found, and Why We Couldn’t Walk Away

An 800-square-foot house. A lifetime of memories. And a roof that had been leaking for years. This is the story of our first project and the woman who inspired it.

When our volunteers first knocked on Carolyn’s door, they came expecting a few repairs. What they found was something more — a kind, quietly resilient woman living in conditions that no one should have to endure.

Carolyn grew up in the Triangle area, spent three decades in New York, then came home to care for her aging parents. After they passed, she stayed on in the small 800-square-foot family home. It was familiar. It was hers. But over the years, the house had fallen into serious disrepair: a roof that leaked with every rain, electrical outlets that hadn’t been replaced in decades, no HVAC system, and a bedroom ceiling that had caved in entirely.

"We thought it was our time to offer some care to her and her home. Once you meet Carolyn, you understand why this felt less like a project and more like a responsibility."
That sense of responsibility is at the heart of how Triangle Neighbors works. Unlike large-scale housing programs that cycle through dozens of cases, we commit fully to one project at a time — staying as long as it takes to make a real, lasting difference. And with Carolyn’s home, there was a lot of work to do.

Completed so far...

All of this work was done by volunteers — neighbors who showed up on weekends with tools, skills, and a willingness to get their hands dirty for someone who needed it. Every dollar donated went straight to materials and essential contractor work. No overhead. No waste.

There’s still more ahead: new siding, a front porch, kitchen renovation, flooring, and painting. But for Carolyn, the home already feels different. Warmer. Safer. More like the place she always knew it could be.
